Magnoliaceae is known for its large flowers in the colorful direction. In addition, magnolol extracted from Magnoliaceae has been used as a Chinese herbal medicine for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine. Recently, scientists from the United States published a new research progress in the international academic journal oncotarget, they found that magnolol has a miraculous effect in fighting head and neck cancer.

According to the National Cancer Institute's survey data, at least three-quarters of head and neck cancer patients suffer from head and neck cancer due to tobacco and alcohol use. This type of cancer has a 50% survival rate, which is about every year. 20,000 Americans died of head and neck cancer.
And honokiol is a major active ingredient in Magnolia plant extracts and has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries for the treatment of anxiety and other diseases. Later studies have found that honokiol has a role in cancer treatment, which may activate multiple signaling pathways in a variety of cancer cells to inhibit tumor cell growth.
In the study, the researchers found that honokiol has a significant role in combating head and neck cancer by inhibiting tumor cell growth by blocking the EGFR signaling pathway. Many previous studies have found that in most head and neck cancers, there is overexpression of EGFR, so targeting EGFR may be an important target for the treatment of head and neck cancer. Based on the experimental results, the researchers pointed out that the combination of honokiol and EGFR is stronger than the common therapeutic drug gefitinib for head and neck cancer. They used a head and neck cancer cell line derived from different parts of humans to test the effect of the drug. In addition, the tumor was transplanted into mice and then treated with drugs. The results showed that honokiol can inhibit the growth of tumor cells. Head and neck cancer has a good therapeutic effect.
This study shows that honokiol is a biologically active small molecule with very promising applications and may have important application value in the treatment of head and neck cancer, but this still needs further research, especially the further validation of clinical research.
